If you intend to travel for Kyoto sightseeing, you must include this in your list. Its one of the most famous local & foreign tourist destinations in Kyoto. We visited here during the Kyoto Gion festival time and it was so crowded. According to the locals, this is a crowded place most of the time but if you manage to go there in the morning, it could be much free.

Favorite spot for taking photos. Very well preserved. The red shrines are maintained in good shape.

As they mentioned on the location, it is the most popular location for tourist. Expect lots of people going up to shrine and lots of cameras. Even though there's a lot of people, the temple and the shrine are still remarkable. Definitely, once in a life time experience.
